CALL 911 FOR EMERGENCIES
Peach County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) & Rescue is a modern paramedicine organization that covers all 151 square miles of Peach County, Georgia. Our crews will respond to nearly 6,000 calls for help this year. We pride ourselves on our evidence-based approach to paramedicine, our state-of-the-art equipment, and the just culture fostered by our leadership team and staff. We are a healthcare organization operating at the crossroads of medicine, public health, and public safety.
We provide 911 advanced life support ambulance services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with ambulances staffed around-the-clock in Fort Valley and Byron. A third ambulance is staffed from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm each day and is stationed strategically near Highway 49 and the 247 Connector. Our ambulances are dispatched by the Peach County e911 center whose telecommunicators are trained in Emergency Medical Dispatch, allowing them to prioritize calls for help based upon objectively determined urgency.
While ambulance services may take different forms depending upon the community they serve, one thing remains constant, paramedicine is an intricate system with many moving parts. In Peach County we are a department of the Peach County Board of Commissioners. We work closely with area hospital emergency departments, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, public health, and others, particularly public lay responders. This has never been more important than with two of our current efforts; the placement of more first responder and public access defibrillators to assist in the case of sudden cardiac arrest, and the placement of Stop The Bleed kits to assist in the event of serious bleeding from an injury.
Our service, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Advanced EMTs, and Paramedics are licensed and regulated by the State of Georgia, Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma.
If you would like more information concerning EMS, have questions about our department, or are interested in a career with Peach County EMS & Rescue, please contact our Director or Deputy Director. Contact information may be found under their photographs on this page.
Billing for EMS Services
EMS billing is highly technical and closely regulated by the State and Federal government. Because of this, Peach County retains the services of a professional billing company to complete this function on its behalf. This company is Central Georgia Billing Service, Inc.
Because of the overhead associated with providing ambulance services, these bills can seem very expensive. In most cases, the bill is fully or partially covered by the patient’s healthcare insurer. These insurers include commercial insurance (often provided by your employer), Medicare, Medicare replacement plans, Medicare supplement plans, Medicaid, and sometimes paid out-of-pocket by the patient themselves.
We understand that billing, and insurance reimbursement, are often confusing. If you have questions concerning your bill or what your insurer may have, or may not have, paid in association with your bill, we encourage you to contact our billing company directly. You may contact them by telephone toll free at (833) 200-5037, or at (706) 749-2225. They may also be reached via email at susan-kitchens@peachcounty.gov.
EMS licensure is a tiered step process with educational requirements, knowledge, and skills advancing from one step to the next. The EMT is the beginning stage of EMS and encompasses skills such as learning to assess a patient, control bleeding, splint a bone, and treat conditions that are immediately life-threatening.
Advanced EMTs have established a solid foundation as an EMT and are beginning to advance their knowledge to treat an even broader range of issues. They have learned advanced assessment techniques, can start IVs, and administer a few more medications than an EMT.
The Paramedic is the pinnacle of EMS licensure (for now.) They have undergone rigorous training and spent hundreds of hours in the classroom and in the field mastering their craft, only to learn that there is always more to learn. They understand pathophysiology, pharmacology, and can do many of the advanced skills that you see on your favorite TV dramas. They can interpret an EKG for signs of a heart attack, administer dozens of medications, or place a tube down your trachea to help you breathe.
EMT is the first step of EMS licensure and can typically be completed in 9-12 weeks with around 48-60 hours of classroom instruction time and 24-48 clinical or field internship hours. The paramedic program is very often an associate’s degree level curriculum. The Paramedic will spend 1200-1800 hours in the classroom and most programs require about 1000 clinical and field internship hours. Peach County, Fort Valley, and Byron fire trucks are strategically placed around the county to provide optimal response time. These trucks are often staffed with Emergency Medical Responders or EMTs who can render aid to patients until an ambulance arrives. We do our best to be available when you need us, but on busy days, we may be responding from the hospital, and it may take us a little longer. Our partners at the fire departments help bridge the time gap, and they’re a great set of extra hands when we need a little help.
No, but Peach County Fire Department does on an appointment basis. You may schedule by contacting Julie McCook at 478-825-3687.
We recommend all churches, businesses, schools, and any place where sizeable groups congregate add an AED to their tool box. Zoll AEDs are our preference as the pads are interchangeable with our units, making the changeover simple when we arrive. Different sites and dealers provide the best pricing options at varied times but in general, expect to spend in the $600-800 range. Although a sizeable expenditure up front, you are potentially contributing to someone returning to their family. 90% of cardiac arrest victims who are defibrillated within one minute have a positive outcome. For every minute that goes by after that, those odds decrease by 5-9%. Who knows? The life you save may be your own! We’re also happy to train you, your staff, or your congregation in “Hands Only” CPR and AED application at any time. Call 478-827-3178 to schedule.
